On 14 January, Dr. Virgilijus Valancius, Team Leader, EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine”, participated in the press conference dedicated to the adoption of the draft law #1516 “On Ensuring The Right To Fair Trial” along with Oleksiy Filatov, Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration, and Dr. Volodymyr Butkevych, former judge of the European Court of Human Rights.
The new law was drafted by the Council on Judicial Reform under the President of Ukraine. Coordinated by Oleksiy Filatov, the Council consists of scholars, lawyers, international and local legal experts, representatives of the civil society. Mr. Filatov stressed that the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine had made a significant step with adoption of the draft law in the first reading.
“This law has to provide access to justice for the citizens of Ukraine and this is just a beginning of the judiciary system reform,” – noted Oleksiy Filatov.
According to Dr. Valancius, the EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine” is strongly supporting development of the long-term judiciary reform strategy for Ukraine. “Adoption of the new draft law is a first step and we are sure that the judiciary reform will be implemented in compliance with the European standards. Our project will further contribute to strengthening independence of the judiciary what is utmost important for the Ukrainian citizens,” – said Virgilijus Valancius.
The Verkhovna Rada passed the draft law “On Ensuring the Right to a Fair Trial” (#1656), which received 288 affirmative votes. It envisages implementation of transparent procedures for the appointment of judges, strengthening independence of the judiciary, improved access to the courts’ decisions.
The EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine” has been actively participating in the work of the Council on Judicial Reform under the President of Ukraine.
