The EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine” supported participation of the judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine in the round table discussion “The Role of the Constitutional Court Insuring the Independence of Judiciary” on 22-25 October in Vilnius, Lithuania. The event was organized by the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania. Besides the round table, they also took part in the international workshop dedicated to the Day of the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania.
The Ukrainian delegation consisted of judges of the Constitutional Court Stanislav Shevchuk, Viktor Shyshkin, Serhii Vdovychenko, Mykola Melnyk and led by Justice Yuri Baulin, Head of the Constitutional Court. The delegations of the Constitutional Courts of Latvia and Poland also participated in the roundtable.
During the visit, Justice Baulin me with Dalia Grybauskaitė, the President of the Republic of Lithuania, and Loreta Graužinienė, Speaker of the Parlament of the Republic of Lithuania.
“It is a rare occasion, when Lithuanian, Latvian, Polish judges of the Constitutional Courts will sit at one table to discuss issues that are so pressing for Ukraine at the present moment,” – says Virgilijus Valancius, the project’s Team Leader, – “We believe that success of the judiciary reform in Ukraine to great extent depends on the independence of the Constitutional Court”.
