EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine” co-organized the training for lawyers who provide secondary legal aid
On 13 -15 September the first part of the training for advocates-trainers/moderators was held in Puscha-Vodica. The event was titled “Lawyer’s action in criminal proceedings based on agreements, with respect to application of certain measures of criminal sanctions and ensuring access to proper medical assistance”.
The training was organized by the Coordination Center of Legal Aid, EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine”, American Bar Association“The Rule of Law Initiative” and Ukrainian Foundation for Legal Aid.
On the first day of the advocates participated in two training sessions: “Problem issues connected with the activities of advocates with respect to applying certain measures of criminal sanctions” and “Problem issues connected with the activities of advocates with respect to proper ensuring access to medical assistance”.In the course of the sessionsimplementation of compulsory measures of a medical nature were discussed.
During the next two days the participants learned about ECHR practice on prevention of torture and inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, and discussed problem issues connected with the activities of advocates in criminal proceedings based on agreements .
The experts of the EU “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine” shared experiences on presentation skills, leading training sessions and non-verbal communications. The participants were asked to fill in the questionnaire on reforming the criminal justice system in Ukraine. The results of these opinion polls will become a basis to develop recommendations on the criminal justice reforms in general and elaborate the draft document “Strategic action plan for the advocacy in penal cases”.
The second part of the training is scheduled for 27-28 September.
