On July 18, 2015, the first outreach training “Civil Society and Media Outreach by Regional Bar Self-governance Bodies” held in Chernihiv brought together advocates, journalists and representatives of local CSO.
The event was organized by the Ukrainian National Bar Association, the EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reform in Ukraine”, NGOs the Ukrainian Bar Association and the Association of Advocates of Ukraine, Chernihiv Regional Bar Council and the Regional Press Development Institute
This event marked the start of familiarization with the Declaration on the Protection of Human Rights in Criminal Cases for the purposes of its application in monitoring and elimination of violations of human rights and media coverage of such incidents.
During the exchange of views on the efficiency of such cooperation, the participants acknowledged that there are untapped potential opportunities to involve the civil society to eradication of violations of human rights, professional privileges and guarantees for advocates in criminal cases, realized what an important tool the Declaration could be.
Supported by the trainers, the advocates managed to master the methods of effective communication, discussed the peculiarities of the press coverage of criminal justice issues, and the strategic plan of further dialogue with judges, prosecutors and investigators.
Mark Segal, Key Expert of the EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reform in Ukraine”, mentioned that such method of outreach would be instrumental for eradication of violations of human rights in criminal cases, which required consolidated efforts of the bar, media and civil society.
On September-October 2015, the outreach trainings will be held in all regions of Ukraine. The organizers invite all interested advocates, journalists and civil society activists to submit proposals and suggestions, to share ideas and precedents of violations of human rights in criminal proceedings, and to participate in preparation of these trainings.
