The EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine” continues to provide strategic advice to Ukrainian advocates on establishing professional liability insurance through analysis of the best practices of the EU member-states.
On 18 May, the EU Project, in collaboration with the Ukrainian National Bar Association, League of Insurance Organizations of Ukraine organized a Roundtable “Lawyer’s professional liability insurance: opportunities for implementation in Ukraine”.
Participants included representatives of the NGO “Association of Advocates of Ukraine”, NGO “Ukrainian Bar Association”, the League of Insurance Organizations of Ukraine, and lawyers who have had experience with liability insurance abroad or are ready to get involved in amending Ukrainian legislation in order to regulate this issue.
Valentyn Gvozdiy, Deputy Head of the Ukrainian National Bar Association, expressed gratitude to the EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine” for its assistance, and stressed the importance of introducing such an insurance model in order to protect the citizens of Ukraine from any deficiency in legal services.
Mark Segal, Key Expert of the EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine”, noted that lawyers’ professional liability insurance should be available and provided, alongside other types of insurance available on the Ukrainian market.
Olexander Filonyuk, President of the League of Insurance Organizations of Ukraine, stressed that expanding the insurance market is very important for Ukraine. In his words, adopting best European practices requires introduction of professional liability insurance for lawyers.
Rytis Jokubauskas, Expert of the EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine”, made recommendations and presented a draft professional liability insurance model for Ukraine, in which he explained the rationale for this product for the insurance market, based on the positive experience of the EU member-states.
