On 28-29 May, Virgilijus Valancius, the Project Team Leader, visited Lviv to discuss prospects the Justice Sector Reform Strategy 2015-2020.
Dr. Valancius met with Petro Kablak, President of the Court of Appeal of Lviv Oblast, Roman Fedyk, Prosecutor of Lviv Oblast, Victor Deyneka, Head of the State Judicial Administration in Lviv Oblast, Anatoliy Kopnyak, Deputy Chairman of the Lviv Oblast Bar Council and Andriy Boyko, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Anton Podilchak, Head of the regional branch of Ukrainian Bar Association, as well as representatives of Association of Judges of Ukraine etc.
The key justice sector stakeholders of Lviv oblast agreed to participate in the pilot initiative of EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine” aimed at establishing informal regional justice reform council consisting of representatives of the judiciary, prosecution, advocacy and legal academics. It was agreed that the first joint meeting under proposed initiative would take place at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.
“Institutional cooperation and mutual understanding among judges, prosecutors and advocates is a guarantee of successful implementation of the Justice Sector Reform Strategy 2015-2020 which was recently approved by the President of Ukraine,”
– noted Virgilijus Valancius.
The purpose of the pilot initiative on establishing regional justice reform is to bring together representatives of the judiciary, prosecution, advocacy and legal scholars to discuss problem issues related to the norms of the Criminal Procedure Code and other laws to insure effective implementation of the Justice Sector Reform Strategy 2015-2020. The initiative covers Odesa, Lviv and Kharkiv Oblasts of Ukraine.
