Virgilijus Valancius, Team Leader of the EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine”, was invited to speak at the Rule of Law panel during the fourth Tiger Conference, organised by the leading Ukrainian English-language newspaper KyivPost on 2 December 2015.
The speakers of the panel also were Oksana Syroid, Vice-Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Bohdan Poshva, Judge of the Supreme Court of Ukraine, Davit Sakvarelidze, Deputy Prosecutor General – Prosecutor of Odesa Oblast, and Daria Kalenyuk, Executive Director of Anticorruption Action Center.
“The vector of Ukraine is clear especially in relation to the justice institutions. Approval of Ukraine’s Justice Sector Reform Strategy 2015-2020 and is Action Plan is a good step. Now it’s time to start with its implementation”, – said Dr. Valancius when evaluating ongoing reforms.
In his opinion, it is impossible to change institutions without political will and the number of adopted new laws adopted by the Parliament will not be a solution. “Change the mindset, change the behavior and then big change will come,” – he stressed.
